CBOT rice ends higher
CHICAGO ,Rough rice futures at the Chicago Board of Trade ended mildly firmer on Tuesday on a late round of short covering, traders said.
There was little fresh news to get the market excited on Tuesday, which kept November within a 10-cent trading range.
November settled 2 cents higher at $7.24-1/2 per hundredweight.
At the close, buy-stops were hit from $7.23 to $7.26 in November and local traders covered their short positions.
September, which expires on Friday, settled unchanged at $7.30.
Estimated trading volume was light at 241 futures, down from Monday's 398 - another thin trading session. Option trade was pegged at 30 lots.
But the market opened weaker on light farmer hedge selling, a spill-over from Monday, traders said.
Harvest reports coming out of Arkansas continue to indicate above-average rice yields, crop specialists said.
The US Department of Agriculture is forecasting that top producer Arkansas will raise a record yielding rice crop of 6,550 pounds an acre.
But the US 2003 rice crop is pegged at 198.2 million cwt, down 12.8 million from last year due to fewer planted acres.
After the close, USDA released its weekly world market price for rice, leaving it unchanged at $3.96 per cwt for long grain rough rice.
The loan deficiency payment held at $2.68.
