US seen with chance of winning Japan wheat tender
HAMBURG , The United States stands a good chance of winning a Japanese government tender to purchase 100,000 tonnes of hard wheat to be donated to Jordan as food aid, despite lower prices from at least two other countries, European traders said on Monday.
A tender from Japanese government agency Japan International Cooperation System to purchase the grain from optional origins closed on September 3.
No purchase has yet been made and a decision is expected this week, traders said.
"The US is in with a good chance of winning as the American bids appear pretty competitive," one trader said. "But the lowest bids are believed to have come for Czech Republic and Russian wheat."
Among other bidders are supplies from Canada, Australia, the European Union and Argentina.
Shipment is in two 50,000 tonne consignments between November 15 to 30 and December 15 to 30.
The tender is to help Jordan recover from any negative economic impact stemming from the Iraq war.
On 19 June, the Japanese government bought 100,000 tonnes of hard wheat for donation to Jordan.
But another tender was postponed on July 22 because of lack of storage space in Jordan.
