Egypt picks US wheat above French bid
CAIRO , Egypt's main official wheat buyer said on Wednesday he had bought 120,000 tonnes of US soft white wheat for September 25-October 10 shipment, again snubbing French grain.
Mohamed Abdel-Razek, president of the purchasing committee of the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), told Reuters he had paid $153.00 per tonne, FOB from the west coast.
He said he bought two cargoes of 60,000 T each from Louis Dreyfus and Columbia Grain, both at the same price.
GASC said on Tuesday it was seeking offers to purchase 60,000 tonnes of any type of US wheat, French milling wheat or Australian standard white wheat for September 25-October 10 shipment.
GASC also said it was seeking offers for 30,000 or 60,000 tonnes of Syrian soft wheat for the same shipment period, at GASC's option.
Abdel-Razek said he had only received bids for US and French wheat. He said the price for French milling wheat had been $152.99/T.
At a difference of one cent, he said he had preferred soft white wheat over the French wheat on offer.
GASC last bought wheat on August 26, paying Louis Dreyfus $149.22 per tonne FOB US Gulf/East Coast for 60,000 tonnes of US SRW wheat for September 21-30 loading.
GASC has returned to the US market in force since June, after using other cheaper suppliers last season, when US prices soared due to drought.
