China's 2003 grain output to drop by three percent
Reuters
BEIJING , China's grain output for 2003 is expected to drop by three percent to 442 million tonnes, state radio reported on Wednesday.
"China's grain output will drop three percent year on year to 442 million tonnes," it said the latest figures showed.
China produced 457.11 million tonnes of grain in 2002, up one percent from the previous year. The harvest reversed three years of declining output.
The main reason for the expected drop in output this year was that many areas had increased plantings of cash crops, such as vegetables, flowers, tea and fruit, as well as high-quality farm products, state radio said.
The total area for grains was seen down by four percent.
In western provinces, government forestry policy reduced grain area.
Farmers in the north-east shifted to growing soybeans because they yielded higher returns, it said.
Corn, wheat and rice areas all declined in the north-eastern provinces.
The weather was also a factor, with spring drought in the north-east, flooding along the central Huai River and high temperatures in southern China hurting summer grain and early rice output.
