Russia's 2003 wheat crop revised down
MOSCOW , SovEcon has revised its wheat production forecast for 2003 downwards to 33-36 million tonnes from a previous July estimate of 34-38 million, due to slow harvesting progress.
A serious drop in the area sown with wheat this year has combined with reduced yields and slow harvesting.
Russia's total area sown with wheat for the 2003 harvest fell by 3.4 million hectares to 22.2 million hectares.
Winter wheat area declined most significantly by nearly 2.7 million hectares to 7.4 million hectares.
By the end of August, the harvesting of winter wheat had been practically completed.
Rains had interrupted the harvesting process and had increased losses.
Average yields, achieved from the threshed area, were about 25 percent lower than last year.
By August 19, all farms had threshed grain from 5.6 million hectares, or from just 25 percent of the total wheat area, and harvested 12.45 million tonnes by bunker weight against 32 million tonnes by the same date last year.
Prospects for the spring wheat production remain mixed. They are relatively good in the Urals and satisfactory in Siberia.
However, the harvesting in these regions will depend on the weather in late September and in October due to delays in the wheat sowing campaign in the eastern part of Russia.
