High prices dampen rice trade in Vietnam
HANOI , A rise in prices and lack of supply has dampened rice trade in Vietnam, the world's third-largest exporter of the grain, traders said on Wednesday.
"There is almost no buying at the moment," said a trader in Ho Chi Minh City.
On Wednesday, export prices for Vietnam 25 percent broken rice rose to $163-$164 a tonne, FOB Saigon Port, from $160-$162 a week ago.
The higher grade five percent broken rice was quoted at $183-$184, compared with $180-$182 a week earlier.
Traders said they were seeking to buy the five percent broken grade at $181-$182.
They said supplies remained thin despite the end of harvest of the latest summer-autumn crop in the Mekong Delta rice basket as farmers were holding stocks in expectations of further price rises.
They said talk that the government was stockpiling grain for delivery to Iraq in November had prompted prices to rise.
Under the oil-for-food programme, Vietnam would ship mostly five-percent broken and twice-polished grade rice at $300 a tonne, CIF. But the US-led war on Iraq disrupted the shipments.
The United Nations said in May that Vietnam could resume rice exports to Iraq by November, allowing exporters to begin loading the grain at the key Saigon Port the same month.
This week, one vessel was loading 14,000 tonnes at Saigon Port for Brazil. Another vessel had finished loading 14,036 tonnes for Cuba.
The government estimates Vietnam's rice exports rose 23.5 percent to 2.97 million tonnes in the first eight months of this year compared with a year earlier, earning $577 million.
