Russia keeps grain crop, exports forecast
ST PETERSBURG , Russia retained its forecast for the 2003/04 agricultural year grain output at 70 million tonnes and for exports at five million tonnes, Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev said on Monday.
"We maintain our forecast at 70 million tonnes," Gordeyev told reporters in St Petersburg, where he is attending an agricultural fair.
"There will be sufficient grain in the country. And if we have 70 million tonnes of grain, we may export around five million tonnes."
Russia expects a decline in grain production this year from a bumper crop of 86.6 million tonnes last year, due to lower area sown with winter grains, high winter losses, delays in the spring sowing and in the harvesting.
Earlier on Monday, the ministry said the country had threshed around 30 million tonnes of grain by August 25, down from 64.5 million tonnes by August 24 last year.
"The harvesting campaign is progressing in difficult conditions. The weather, especially in the European part, is slowing its pace. We are some two weeks behind schedule," Gordeyev said.
