Bangkok rice fields damaged by drought
A water shortage is taking its toll on northeastern farmers whose paddy fields and crops have been damaged.
At least 10 districts in Buri Ram have battled a water shortage for more than three months. Only half the province's planting area of three million rai has been sown.
Rice production this year is likely to fall 20%. The price of jasmine rice are likely to go up to 7,000-8,500 baht a tonne due to the shortage.
Somjit Bunduang, a farmer in Satuk district, said his eight-rai paddy field gave him 60 sacks of rice last year. Battling a drought, he was unlikely to grow enough rice this time around, and would have to work as a labourer in Bangkok to support his family.
In Udon Thani, 119,570 rai of paddy fields have been damaged. Of the province's rice planting area of 2.4 million rai, only 60-70% has been planted and all rice seedlings have been damaged. Farmer Theerawat Kulasing said he would ask authorities to try rain making. Pichai Rattanakorn, of Udon Thani irrigation office, said the water level in the province's five reservoirs was very low. His office would stop releasing water to irrigated fields until more rain fell.
