French wheat higher
PARIS , French wheat futures edged to fresh highs on Tuesday as mounting concern over Europe's heat-affected maize crop kept sellers sidelined, traders said.
"No one is in the mood to sell at the moment," one trader said.
Paris-traded wheat futures were firm across the board, with the November contract as much as 0.75 euros higher at 126.25 euros a tonne, bettering a previous peak of 125.50 first hit on July 24.
January was also 0.75 euros up at 127.75 euros.
Traders believe the EU's maize crop may be badly hit by the scorching temperatures registered across the continent in the past few weeks.
This would leave feed grain supplies extremely tight and spur demand for wheat. The wheat harvest in Europe is now largely finished.
The quantity may be down on last year, but the quality is good putting extra pressure on lower quality feed supplies.
Maize futures were lightly traded, with November unchanged on the day at 137.50 euros a tonnes, still up from around 130 euros on July 24.
"The maize crop will be smaller by how much we don't know yet but as the heatwave continues, no one is taking any chances," the trader added.
Traders also noted that the market's dip since late July, when the EU announced a suspension of export tenders to try to keep grain within the bloc, had been relatively brief.
Traders said they did not expect the panel to adopt any extra measures such as an export tax at this stage.
