Vietnam rice prices higher
HANOI , Poor supply and fresh government demand to assist drought-stricken central provinces led rice prices higher in Vietnam on Wednesday, traders said.
"It is very hard to buy at the moment," said a foreign trader in Ho Chi Minh City.
He said most exporters in the world's third-largest exporter of the grain had a hard time purchasing the 15 and 25 percent broken rice grades as farmers and rice traders had run out of stock.
The five and 25 percent broken rice are the two most popular grades for exports.
On Wednesday, export prices for Vietnam 25 percent broken rice rose to $163 a tonne, FOB Saigon Port, from $159-$161 last week.
The higher grade five percent broken rice was quoted at $181-$183 a tonne, compared with $180-$183 a week ago.
Traders said some fresh demand emerged in the last week but traders are having difficult time filing the orders given the shortage of the grain.
They said the current drought in central Vietnam, which had ruined 12,000 hectares of paddy and affected another 52,000 hectares, would hurt rice supplies for exports as the government would have to raise emergency stocks to feed the area's farmers.
"We are monitoring the drought very closely and the central government has been in close contact with us in case a food crisis takes place," said an official at the Agriculture Department of Quang Tri, the hardest hit province.
Initial government reports said more than half a million people in central Vietnam have been affected by the water shortage.
Central provinces are not Vietnam's key rice growing region, which are centred in the southern Mekong Delta.
Meanwhile, traders said the Philippine government is planning to buy 70,000 tonnes of unhusked rice, or 30,000 tonnes of the husked grain from the state-run Vinafood 1. No further details of the deal were available.
The government has said it wanted a bigger slice of Africa's rice imports.
