Canada and EU wheat output seen falling: USDA
WASHINGTON , Drought will continue to reduce wheat crops in two major producing regions, Canada and the European Union, and will contribute to dwindling world ending stocks, the US Agriculture Department said on Tuesday.
USDA is now projecting a 94.5-million-tonne wheat crop in the EU for 2003/04, down from the 99.5 million tonnes forecast last month.
For Canada, the wheat crop will fall to 22 million tonnes, down from 25 million tonnes projected by USDA in July.
World wheat ending stocks for the year are now seen at 130.55 million tonnes, down from 140.29 million tonnes USDA projected in July.
Overall foreign production is down about 10 million tonnes from last month to 486.98 million tonnes and 32 million tonnes below last year, USDA said.
EU wheat exports are now pegged at a record low 10.5 million tonnes, down from the 14 million tonnes projected by USDA last month.
Canada's exports this year, USDA said, will be 14.5 million tonnes, down 500,000 tonnes from last month's forecast.
Ukraine's production, which topped 20 million tonnes last year, will only reach 5 million tonnes this year, USDA said, virtually erasing the country's ability to export wheat.
American exports, USDA said, will climb to 28.58 million tonnes, up from 26.54 million forecast last month, mostly because of reduced competition from Canada and the EU.
