Iran proposed as distributor of Thai rice
Iran has offered itself as a logistics centre to distribute Thai rice to the 12 former Soviet states.
Thai Commerce Ministry officials in turn have asked Iran to increase its rice purchases from Thailand, now around 200,000 to 300,000 tonnes a year. Iran now imports about 800,000 tonnes rice a year.
The proposals were exchanged at a meeting yesterday between Commerce Minister Adisai Bodharamik, ambassador Rasoul Eslami and members of Iran's parliament.
A logistics partnership would entail developing a warehouse at the port in Kirsch Island to store up to one million tonnes of rice, along with rail delivery routes and distribution channels.
The 12 former Soviet states have a combined population of more than 300 million. They are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
So far, Thailand has sold very little rice to these countries.
Mr Adisai said the proposal was viable, as Thailand could sell rice to Iran at competitive prices, enabling the country to re-export it.
Vichai Sriprasert, the president of the Rice Exporters Association, said the Thai government must be clear about the safety and quality of rice being kept at the warehouse, as well as payment terms and profit sharing.
