India Imposes Temporary Ban on Orders of Wheat & Rice for Export
Asia Pulse
NEW DELHI, Alarmed at the huge 23,000,000 tonne backlog of export deals which are yet to be executed, the Indian government has put a halt to new grain orders until the pending deliveries are made.
In effect, this means that the Food Corporation of India (FCI) will only allocate wheat and rice to those exporters who have already deposited the payment and obtained a Release Order issued to lift stocks from the Central Pool, official sources said.
They said the decision was taken by the federal Food Ministry after a meeting of the High Level Committee on Foodgrain Exports, which felt there was no point taking fresh orders from exporters unless the huge backlog of around 700-1000 rail rakes of grains are delivered to port.
The railway officials pointed out during the meeting that this amounts to a commitment of about 1,650,000 to 2,350,000 tonnes, which will take 3 to 5 months for delivery.
Officials said the suspension of fresh allocations has been made only for the time being and once the current pressure is eased, exports will resume. It could be one or two months but no specific time frame has been fixed.
