Vietnam rice: Mekong floods rise, harvest nears end
HANOI Seasonal floods are arriving at the Mekong Delta rice basket of Vietnam, the world's third-largest exporter of the grain, but traders said the summer-autumn crop will have been harvested before waters peak in late September.
HANOI (August 07 2003) : Seasonal floods are arriving at the Mekong Delta rice basket of Vietnam, the world's third-largest exporter of the grain, but traders said the summer-autumn crop will have been harvested before waters peak in late September.
"Floods are there, but waters have yet to hit the crop," a state rice trader in Ho Chi Minh City said on Wednesday.
Weather reports said that by Sunday waters at the gauging station on the Tien, a Mekong River branch in Vietnam, would rise to 2.3 metres (7.5 feet) above sea level, 0.7 metres lower than an alarm level at which river banks and low areas are at risk.
A report said waters are arriving in the delta province of Long An bordering Cambodia.
But traders said harvesting of the summer-autumn rice crop, the 12-province delta's second-highest yielding, would end late this week or early next.
The seasonal floods are forecast to peak in late September or early October and traders say the impact would be minimal after farmers had reinforced dykes and irrigation system.
The flooding season lasts through November.
Rice traders said many farmers in the Mekong Delta were holding back paddy after ending their harvest.
"Farmers are not selling much," said a foreign trader in Ho Chi Minh City. "They hope prices would rise further."
Foreign buyers had said they expected prices to soften at the end of the harvest when they would return to seal new deals.
However, local prices of fresh paddy have firmed to 1,600-1,650 dong (10.3-10.7 cents) per kg this week from 1,500-1,600 dong a month ago.
The agriculture ministry has estimated the summer-autumn crop output at 7.3 million tonnes, unchanged from last year.
Export quotations of the 25 percent broken rice also widened to $159-$161 a tonne, FOB Saigon Port, from $160 last week.
The higher grade five percent broken rice is quoted at $180-$183 a tonne, compared with $181-$182 a week ago.
Traders said eight vessels were now loading at Saigon Port for destinations including Cuba, the Philippines and Africa, with most of the grain for Havana and Manila under government deals.
The Trade Ministry said that of the 3.25 million tonnes of rice deals Vietnam has signed so far this year, one million tonnes were under government contracts and 2.25 million tonnes between companies.
Vietnam exported 2.64 million tonnes of rice in the first seven months of this year, up 38.1 percent on a year earlier.
Last week Agriculture Minister Le Huy Ngo told Reuters that Vietnam has been expanding its rice markets to Africa and Russia, paving the way for shipments this year to reach 3.7-3.9 million tonnes of better-quality rice, from 3.24 million tonnes in 2002.
