European grain prices ride higher
LONDON ,Blistering heat across Europe buoyed grain prices on Wednesday as worries mounted about the quality of this season's crops, analysts said.
London's benchmark November wheat futures were back at the contract highs set earlier this week, while Paris milling wheat prices held firm as analysts began to assess the damage from the exceptionally hot weather.
Latest forecasts from COPA-COGECA, the umbrella organisation for European Union farming groups, put grain production in the 15 member states at 197 million tonnes this year, down from 209 million in 2002.
EU consumption is running at around 192 million tonnes.
With the French wheat crop already in from the fields, fears are now growing for the maize harvest, which traditionally starts in late September.
Paris-traded November maize futures jumped three euros to a new contract high of 138.50 euros per tonne.
Crops are shrivelled and stunted in places, with temperatures routinely, in the high 30s Celsius and with curbs on water use in place in many areas.
French maize growers association AGPM predicts a fall in production of between 10 and 15 percent from last season's crop of around 16.5 million tonnes.
Germany's wheat harvest could be up to two million tonnes lower than last year's 20.8 million tonnes.
"Quality is looking good in the final regions and this could compensate a lot for drought damage in other areas," an analyst said
"Early wheat samples have indicated excellent quality and mostly average yields, but if the hot weather stays through until next week, we could start to have problems," a trader said.
The crop is put at 14-15.2 million tonnes, well down on last year's 16.05 million.
