148,000 Tons of U.S. rice to move to Philippines under PL 480 title agreement
WASHINGTON-USDA recently announced the signing of a PL 480 Title I agreement with the Government of the Philippines for the sale of 148,000 metric tons of U.S. rice.
The agreement provides $40 million for the sale, and is the largest PL 480 Title I agreement signed to date for the current U.S. government fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, 2003. The USA Rice Federation applauded the announcement.
"The USA Rice Federation worked closely with USDA and the Government of the Philippines to facilitate this sale," said Jamie Warshaw, chairman of USA Rice's Food Aid Subcommittee. "We're pleased to see the positive results of this cooperative effort, which will benefit the people of the Philippines as well as our rice industry here in the United States," Warshaw said. "We will continue our efforts to press for the inclusion of U.S. rice in food aid for needy countries around the world," he said.
The PL 480 Title I program provides for sales of U.S. agricultural commodities on concessional credit terms to governments and private entities in developing countries that have demonstrated the potential to become commercial markets, are undertaking measures to improve their food security and agricultural development, and show the greatest need for food.
USA Rice Federation is the national advocate for all segments of the U.S. rice industry, conducting activities to influence government programs, developing and initiating programs to increase worldwide demand for U.S. rice, and providing other services to increase industry profitability for all segments.
