Ukraine to borrow grain from Russia
KIEV , Ukraine will borrow one million tonnes of Russian-origin grain this year to cover a grain shortage in the 2003/04 season, the country's presidential press service said on Monday.
An agreement to supply the grain was reached on Friday, when Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich was in Moscow for talks, the press service said in a statement.
The presidential press service gave no details of the deal, but local news agencies quoted sources as saying one million tonnes of grain would be supplied from the Russian state reserve to Ukraine's reserve by the end of this year.
An official from Ukraine's state reserve declined to comment on the reports.
On Friday, Russia pledged to help Ukraine overcome its grain shortage by supplying up to 200,000 tonnes of grain this month.
Weather forecasters say Ukraine's crop could fall to 20 million tonnes, about half of last year's total, as millions of hectares of crops have been damaged or destroyed by bad weather.
Analysts say Ukraine, which needs at least six million tonnes of grain to cover domestic demands will import between two and three million tonnes of grain in 2003/04 July-June season mostly from Russia and Kazakhstan.
