Bangladesh sees two percent growth in rice production
DHAKA ,Bangladesh aims to boost rice production by two percent to 27.21 million tonnes in 2003-04 on anticipation of continued farm-friendly weather this year, a senior agriculture official said on Friday.
The country harvested 26.65 million tonnes of rice, its main staple, in the fiscal year ended June, helped by ample rain, less floods and moderate temperatures, he said.
Major rice varieties produced in Bangladesh are Aus, Aman and Boor. The country also produces wheat and potato as secondary staples.
"Bangladesh loses 80,000 hectares of land every year for various reasons including infrastructure development, river erosion and human habitation," Chancre said.
He said the net amount of arable land in the country now was nearly nine million hectares (22.24 million acres), but some of them are mullet-crop areas, meaning two to three crops are produced every year on the same land.
Bangladesh set a target to produce 27.21 million tonnes of rice on 11.05 million hectares of land in 2003/04, against production of 26.65 million tonnes on 10.21 million hectares in 2002/03.
Aus (April-July) Production target is 1.84 million tonnes on 1.25 million hectares, against yield of 1.85 million tonnes on 1.24 million hectares in 2002/03.
Aman (August-November): The country hopes to produce 11.75 million tonnes of Aman rice on 5.80 million hectares in 2003/04 against 11.50 million tonnes on 4.99 million hectares in the previous year.
Boor (March-June): The target for Boor production has been set at 13.62 million tonnes on 4.0 million hectares in 2003/04 against previous year's 13.30 million tonnes on 3.98 million hectares.
The country expects to produce 1.50 million tonnes of wheat (November-March) on 750,000 hectares of land in 2003/04 against 1.49 million tonnes on the same amount of land in the previous year.
Bangladesh is likely to produce 4.37 million tonnes of potato (November-January) on 350,000 hectares compared with 4.22 million tonnes on 318,000 hectares in 2002/03.
The country's jute (March-August) production target has been set at 5.35 million bales (180 kg each) on 500,000 hectares in 2003/04 against 4.41 million bales on 437,000 hectares in the previous year.
Jute fibre, derived from reed-like plants, is the country's principal cash crop fetching more than $300 million in export earnings annually.
Cotton (September-January) will be cultivated on 45,000 hectares of land with an expected yield of 92,000 bales in 2003/43.
The country produced only 42,223 bales on 18,310 hectares in 2002/03.
