Vietnam rice trade seen buoyed by fresh demand
HANOI ,Rice trading in Vietnam, the world's third-largest exporter of the grain, is expected to pick up on fresh government export deals to Africa that may produce price rises, traders said on Wednesday.
"There are no reasons for prices to fall further," said a trader in Ho Chi Minh City, adding rice prices would likely edge up by $1-$2 per tonne in the next two weeks.
Talk suggesting the government could revise its rice export target to 3.9 million tonnes from a previous goal of 3.5 million tonnes had buoyed market sentiment, he said.
Agriculture Minister Le Huy Ngo told Reuters earlier on Wednesday that while Vietnam was still focused on its traditional rice buying markets, such as the Middle East and Asia, it was targeting a big expansion in sales to Africa and Russia.
Traders said the additional export volume was likely to come from government contracts with several African countries and the resumption of exports to Iraq.
In May, the United Nations allowed Vietnam to resume rice exports to Iraq by November.
The rice trade could also be boosted by a greater availability of vessels, with exporters until recently having a problem contracting ships, traders said.
Four vessels are this week loading a combined 41,200 tonnes at Saigon Port for Africa, Cuba, Indonesia and the Philippines, up from two ships a week ago.
Most of the 12 provinces in the Mekong Delta rice basket have completed the summer-autumn crop ahead of the arrival of seasonal floods next month, traders said.
The agriculture ministry has estimated the paddy output at 7.3 million tonnes, unchanged from last year.
Weather reports said waters had been rising quickly in recent days on the Mekong river.
The seasonal floods are expected to peak in late September but agriculture officials said upgraded irrigation systems would reduce the risk of prolonged inundation.
Local prices of fresh paddy rose to 1,650-1,700 dong (10.7-11.0 cents) per kg, from 1,500-1600 dong last week.
Export prices for Vietnam 25 percent broken rice stood at $160 a tonne, FOB Saigon Port, unchanged from last week.
The five percent rice edged up to $181-$182 a tonne, FOB basis, from $179-$180 a week ago.
Vietnam exported 2.64 million tonnes of rice worth $496 million in the first seven months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 38.1 percent in volume and 19.2 percent in value, according to government data.
