London wheat futures edge lower, exports support
Reuters
LONDON , Liffe wheat futures edged lower on Friday on pre-weekend profit-taking, but sentiment was bullish after the EU authorised a large amount of wheat export licences this week, traders said.
November closed 25 pence lower at 82.15 pounds a tonne on volume of 221 lots.
"The market fundamentals are still bullish, although we wobbled slightly on profit-taking. But it's going to keep rising," a trader said.
Consumer buying and a fall in sterling against the euro also supported the market.
Gleadell Agriculture said it was shipping 17,000 tonnes of new crop feed barley to Spain early next week.
"It is 17,000 tonnes of barley to be shipped Tuesday or Wednesday next week, weather permitting," Managing Director Jon Duffy told Reuters.
British physical wheat prices firmed this week, supported by increased consumer buying and more optimism over exports.
But traders said volumes were low with farmers unwilling to release large quantities of grain.
The National Farmers' Union said this year's wheat harvest was expected to get off to a flying start a week earlier than usual on August 1 if recent good weather continued.
"The recent high temperatures have helped to ripen the wheat crop early this year," NFU cereals chairman and farmer Peter Kendall said.
