Export-oriented rice growing area to be built in Red River Delta
VNA
Ha Noi,The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has worked out a plan to build an export-oriented rice growing area in the Hong (Red) River Delta-the northern region's rice basket.
The Red River Delta includes Ha Noi, Hai Phong City and Vinh Phuc, Ha Tay, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Thai Binh, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh provinces.
Bestowed with fertile soil, the country's best network of irrigation and an abundant pool of labour, the area produces 7 million tonnes of food annually.
The planned export-oriented rice growing area is designed to cover 300,000 hectares concentrating in 25 districts of Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Hai Duong and Hai Phong, which have more competitive advantages over others in soil quality, farmers' experience, and rural infrastructure.
Experts predict that the area may expand to 500,000 ha, yielding 3 million tonnes of food annually.
At present, the North's largest food producers are Thai Binh, Nam Dinh and Ha Tay, each producing over 1 million tonnes of food per year.
Aware of the important role of the seed quality in export-oriented rice production, the regional agricultural service has systematically invested in a series of high-yield and high-quality rice strains suitable to different soils marked off for commerical production. The efforts have helped increase the per-ha value by between 1 and 2 million VND (70-140 USD).
The Red River delta has also shifted tens of thousands of ha under low-yield rice into other crops of higher economic value, especially fruit, flowers and bonsai, as well as aquaculture. As a result, a number of former submerged rice fields now turned into fish ponds have brought in an increase of four or five folds in production output value. Profits from flowers and bonsais growing in parched fields have proved ten times higher than that given by rice.
Another advantage of the Red River Delta is tens of thousands of ha of double crop fields ideal to short-term subsidiary food crops of high economic value. Intensive farming on such fields has resulted in a production output value of 50 million VND upwards a ha and helped 350,000 farmer households earn 50 million VND a year.
