PM Khai orders stable rice production for export
Ha Noi,Prime Minister Phan Van Khai has urged all ministries, government agencies and localities concerned to take actions to stabilise the domestic paddy production and market in favour of export, according to the government office.
Under an instruction issued by the prime minister recently, it said, the government will take ways and means to spur market demands and stabilise rice prices on the market by fixing floor prices annually.
The Trade Ministry will work closely with the Ministries of Finance and Agriculture and Rural Development on rice prices before presenting them to the Prime Minister for approval, the office stated.
The Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry will cooperate with other relevant ministries and agencies to seek ways to increase the competitive edge of Viet Nam's rice for export in the years ahead, it said, adding that these measures will be submitted to the prime minister in the last quarter of this year.
Earlier, Deputy Trade Minister Mai Van Dau also urged Vietnamese rice exporters to look for higher price export deals, saying they should focus on prices while capitalising on surging global demand in the second half of this year.
He stressed that the Government will have a close watch on contracts so exporters should avoid signing contracts at lower prices than those at the start of this month.
Export prices of 5 percent broken rice have been around 182 USD per tonne, or 2,800 VND a kilo, so far this month. Domestic unhusked rice prices increased to 1,600-1,700 VND a kilo, up 50-100 VND since June.
According to the FAO and US Department of Agriculture, world rice harvests have crashed to a two-decade low, hitting exports from major players such as India, China and Thailand. As a result, world prices are expected to go up inexorably in the near future.
In the first half of the year, Viet Nam exported around 2.3 million tonnes, earning 433.5 million USD, a year-on-year increase of 48 percent in volume and 29.5 percent in value. Exporters have, so far this year, signed contracts to export 3.2 million tonnes.
Asia remains Viet Nam's biggest rice importer, accounting for 58.9 percent of the country's total rice export, followed by Africa (18.8 percent), the Mid-East, America, Europe and Australia.
