Ukraine cuts wheat imports
KIEV ,Ukraine, facing a milling wheat shortage after exporting large quantities in the first half of the current season, imported 83,200 tonnes of wheat in June compared with 165,400 tonnes in May, analysts said on Friday.
One of Ukraine's leading agricultural consultancies, ProAgro, said in a statement that rising prices in Russia and Kazakhstan and the arrival of domestic grain from the new crop were the main reasons for smaller imports in June.
Analysts also said Ukraine imported a total of 399,000 tonnes of wheat in the first six months of this season, including 2,200 tonnes in January, 4,000 tonnes in February, 26,400 tonnes in March and 117,700 tonnes in April.
ProAgro said Ukraine had imported wheat only from Russia and Kazakhstan in June.
Russia exported 28,900 tonnes of wheat to Ukraine at an average price of $90.50 per tonne DAF, while Kazakhstan sold 54,300 tonnes of wheat to Ukraine at $103.00 per tonne.
Earlier this month analysts said Ukraine had exported about 10.5 million tonnes of grain in the 2002-2003 (July-June) season, including more than six million tonnes of wheat.
Traders and analysts say a fall in Ukraine's wheat crop in 2003 will force Ukraine to continue wheat imports in the 2003/04 season, which could total between two and three million tonnes.
