Vietnam rice prices expected to fall
Reuters
HANOI , Rice prices in Vietnam, the world's third-largest exporter of the grain, are expected to fall further as a key harvest ends in two weeks, prompting foreign buyers to wait for better deals, traders said on Wednesday.
Most of the 12 provinces in the Mekong Delta rice basket are forecast to complete the summer-autumn crop harvest late this month, before the arrival of seasonal floods late next month.
"Everyone expects prices to fall when more supplies are available. So buyers are waiting," said a foreign trader in Ho Chi Minh City, adding that no new deals were signed in the past week.
"The crop should be safe from the floods," he added.
Weather reports forecast floods to peak in late September or early October, but agriculture officials said the upgraded irrigation systems would reduce the risk of prolonged inundation.
Traders said 70 percent of the Delta's summer-autumn crop has been harvested. The region grows three crops a year, with the winter-spring crop the highest yielding, followed by the summer-autumn crop.
The agriculture ministry has estimated the summer-autumn paddy output at 7.3 million tonnes, unchanged from last year. Local prices of fresh paddy softened this week to 1,500-1,600 dong ($9.7-10.3 cents) per kg, from 1,550-1,600 dong last week.
Exports prices for Vietnam 25 percent broken rice stood at $159-$160 a tonne, FOB Saigon Port, against $159 last week. The five percent broken rice was offered at $179-$180 a tonne, FOB basis, from $178-$179 a week ago.
Two vessels are loading a combined 22,500 tonnes at Saigon Port this week for Africa.
