CBOT rice futures up
CHICAGO , Chicago Board of Trade rough rice futures ended firm on Friday on good speculative buying and local short-covering, and despite commercial sales, brokers said.
Rough rice futures settled up 10 to 26 cents per cwt, with July up 10 cents at $5.90 and September up 26 cents at $7.26.
"The market was weak early, probably due to yesterday's poor technical close," one CBOT rice trader said.
"But the fact the market wouldn't break spurred buying." He noted local short-covering was met early by commercial selling.
"Commission houses were then selling puts, which turned options traders into futures buyers," the rice trader said. "Finally, there was aggressive short-covering by locals."
He also noted active buying of nearby July rice futures by a "cash-connected local trader."
CBOT July rough rice futures ends trade on Tuesday, July 22. There were 323 rice contracts registered for delivery purposes with the exchange as of Friday's CBOT close.
Friday's estimated rice futures volume was 953 contracts, compared with the 526 lots traded on Thursday. Rice options volume was seen at 312 lots.
