Argentina cuts 2003-04 wheat area
BUENOS AIRES , Argentina on Wednesday cut its forecast for 2003/04 wheat plantings to 6.15 million hectares from 6.33 million hectares a month ago, citing unfavourable weather in key areas.
Excess rain in parts of Argentina's central plains, called the pampas, and not enough rain in the main wheat producer Buenos Aires province, led to the loss of area, the Agriculture Department said in its monthly crop estimate report.
"Poor weather conditions in a large part of the central-northern section of the pampas, which generated excess humidity, and a lack of rain in south-western Buenos Aires and in almost all of La Pampa province, has reduced the area that will go to wheat this season," the report said.
Argentina sowed 6.3 million hectares with wheat in 2002/03.
The department maintained its forecast for record 2002/03 soy output of 35 million tonnes.
The US Department of Agriculture estimates 2002/03 soy output of 35.5 million tonnes, up from 30 million tonnes of the oilseed last season.
Argentina lowered its forecast for 2002/03 sunseed production to 3.7 million tonnes, from 3.8 million tonnes last month. The country produced 3.8 million tonnes of the oilseed last season.
The government left unchanged its forecast for corn production in 2002/03 of 15 million tonnes.
The USDA expects Argentina to produce 15.5 million tonnes of the grain. Last year, Argentina harvested 14.7 million tonnes of corn.
