Slow bidding for latest EU wheat import quota
PARIS , Bids to import wheat under the European Union's third tranche of its annual quota, which opened this week, are expected to start slowly due to limited available quantities and a weaker euro, traders said on Tuesday.
There is no Ukrainian wheat left for export but competitive Russian prices should allow the EU to fill the 592,000 tonne quarterly segment, which carries a 12-euro a tonne tariff, over the coming weeks, they added.
"We expect a steady flow of bids, spread out over time. There won't be much enthusiasm but they will come," one said.
The EU's annual 2.372 million tonne import quota for low and medium quality wheat, which began at the start of the year to curb huge shipments from the Black Sea region, was divided into four three-month tranches to prevent import surges.
The United States and Canada have their own separate quotas, amounting to 572,000 and 38,000 tonnes a year respectively.
Traders could bid for the third tranche of the main quota from Monday, although details will not be officially released until passed by the EU's grain management committee on Thursday.
The first tranche in January was massively over-bid, allowing the EU to fill it immediately. The second, opened in April, took six weeks to complete.
