CBOT rice futures firm
CHICAGO ,Chicago Board of Trade rough rice futures ended firm on Thursday after a very quiet session, with light local sales noted amid light commercial buying of the deferred November contract, traders said.
Rice futures volume on Thursday was estimated at 114 contracts, compared with the 220 lots traded on Wednesday. Rice options volume was seen at 9 lots.
The CBOT was closed on Friday in observance of Independence Day.
A/c/e trade resumes on Sunday night. CBOT rough rice ended on Thursday up 2 cent per cwt to unchanged, with July up 2 cents at $6.00 per cwt and September up 1 cent at $6.65 per cwt. R.J. O'Brien was a light buyer of November, CBOT traders said.
The also noted continued evening of nearby CBOT July rough rice positions. There were five deliveries posted against CBOT July rice futures on Thursday, after the cancellation of 778 receipts on Wednesday.
There has been widespread trader talk during the past week that receipts would be cancelled.
As of Thursday's CBOT close, there were 568 rice contracts registered with the exchange. Traders said on Thursday's weekly export sales data was supportive.
The US Department of Agriculture reported that US rice export sales (old and new-crop combined) for the week ended June 26 totalled 55,900 tonnes.
The sales were 16 percent above the previous week and 9 percent more than the prior 4-week average. The primary buyers were Mexico (12,000 tonnes), Venezuela (10,000 tonnes), Haiti (8,800 tonnes).
In addition, sales previously reported to Cuba (10,000 tonnes) under long grain rough rice were switched to long grain milled rice.
CBOT traders also noted news of a massive upcoming PL 480 purchase of US rice was supportive, although the shipments were expected to take place in 2004.
The Philippines, one of Asia's largest rice importers, announced on Thursday that it would buy this year via US government PL 480 loan financing between 160,000 and 200,000 tonnes of US rice.
CBOT traders noted that the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission would release its weekly Commitments of Traders Report for the week ending July 1 on Monday, July 7.
