French wheat firmer
PARIS ,French wheat remained firm on Thursday as sellers awaited the resumption of harvests interrupted by rain and the outcome of this week's surprisingly low bids at the European Union's export tender, traders said.
On the Rouen cash market, standard wheat gained half a euro to 110.50 euros a tonne for July/August delivery but was steady at 113.50 euros bid for positions beyond October.
Paris-traded futures were mixed by 1400 GMT, with November up 50 cents at 117.50 but January and March both down 50 cents at 118.50 and 120.50 euros.
Earlier, traders submitted bids for 398,000 tonnes of free-market soft wheat through ONIC, of which some 90,000 tonnes was at a refund of 0.01 euros. At least a further 30,000 tonnes was bid in the Netherlands for the same low refund.
Last week, the lowest bids were for a refund of 17.47 euros. Since then the euro has fallen against the dollar and Chicago futures have risen.
French wheat is still at least $10 more expensive than US soft red winter, illustrated by Egypt's decision recently to take 300,000 tonnes of US grain.
Traders said they doubted the Commission would grant exports at the low refund, seen as a ploy by exporters to benefit from the monthly increment.
However, the EU granted similar refunds last year, exporting 1.35 million tonnes in early August.
