Rice exporters leave for Iran on July 4
KARACHI ,A 16-member delegation of Pakistani rice exporters will leave for Iran on Friday for exploring market for Pakistan Basmati and IRRI-9 rice.
This was stated by the Chairman Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (Reap) and leader of the delegation, Abdul Rahim Janoo, here on Thursday.
"Iran can be the biggest market for Pakistani Basmati and IRRI-9 rice if explored with the help of an aggressive marketing," he observed.
Janoo said that the delegation has been planned on the instructions of Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali for utilisation of Gwadar Port for exporting rice to Iran.
Iran has been importing about 900,000 tonnes of Pakistani and Indian Basmati and IRRI-9 rice annually via Dubai.
This can be exported directly from Pakistan, he added.
He pointed out that the Pakistani rice is sold at $500 per tonne to trading houses in Dubai, which sell this rice to Iran at $575 to 600 per tonne.
With direct export, Pakistan can sell this rice to Iran at $550 per tonne.
Iran will get rice at lower price while Pakistan will fetch a higher price by at least $30 to 40 per tonne, he observed.
The Reap chief said that absence of branches of Pakistani banks in Iran would be the biggest hurdle in the way of trade promotion.
However, the Reap will utilise the services of HBL liaison office in Tehran for remitting the export proceeds, he noted.
Janoo said: "Chiloo Kabab', which is the main national dish of Iran, uses aromatic Basmati rice as the basic ingredient."
He said that the Reap would offer Basmati rice to Iran, which has been produced in Sindh.
This rice (PK-198) has the best aroma and the longest grain so far in Basmati variety, he added.
Talking about the itinerary of the delegation, Janoo said that the Pakistani mission would visit Tehran, Zahidan and Mashhad, meet officials, and rice importers.
He said that the Reap delegation is scheduled to call on Iranian President Mohammad Khatami and Iranian Commerce Minister in Tehran in the first leg of visit.
The delegation will also hold discussions with the officials of Government Trading Corporation (GTC), which has been buying Pakistani IRRI-9 rice on occasional basis.
The delegation will meet members of Iranian Chamber of Commerce, Zahidan Chamber of Commerce and Mashhad Chamber of Commerce.
It will also meet the largest rice importer of Iran Agha-e-Dilawari to discuss potentials for rice export.
Janoo said that Reap members would host dinner for the leading rice importers in Zahidan and Mashhad on July 7 and 9. He made it clear that the EPB has not provided any help and the Reap would do at its own expenses.
