Thai Rice Prices Steady; Iran Shows Interest But No Purchases
Bangkok, Export prices of Thai rice were quoted steady in the week to Monday, with the market lacking fresh news to boost sentiment, exporters said.
Most exporters believe Iran hasn't yet made any additional purchases since recently buying 60,000 metric tons of Thai 100% B grade rice from two Thai companies.
"I think Iran is still negotiating with several exporting companies" for some additional rice, said a senior official at a large export firm.
Iran may want to wait for prices to fall further before making any fresh transactions, exporters said.
Thai 100% B grade rice was offered Monday at $211/ton, FOB, compared with $210-$211/ton quoted last week.
Thai 5% and 25% broken rice were offered stable from last week, at $204- $205/ton and $181/ton, FOB, respectively.
Thai prices could decline once Thailand's rice supply increases, exporters said.
Rice supply has declined as some areas have already finished harvesting of the second rice crop. Consequently, exporters are facing difficulties in buying rice, forcing them to maintain or even raise their offers.
Exporters said supply availability could increase if the government reduces or stops its intervention in the domestic market.
Farmers are now selling their paddy to the government at government-set prices under an intervention program. The current program will end July 20, but exporters said the government may slow its purchases before then as current prices are higher than intervention prices.
Thailand exported 3.04 million tons of rice from Jan. 1 to June 19, compared with 3.08 million tons in the same period a year ago, according to the Department of Internal Trade issued Monday.
