CBOT rice futures weak despite bidding in new-crop
CHICAGO , Chicago Board of Trade rough rice futures settled steady to lower on Friday with late sales and spreading pressuring nearby July and bidding of new-crop months supporting deferred contracts, brokers said.
CBOT rice futures settled down 14 cents per hundredweight to unchanged, with July down 14 cents at $6.00 and September down 1/2 cent at $6.69 per cwt.
Prudential Securities and RJ O'Brien were late sellers of about 60 to 90 July rice contracts, while rice options volume was active on the last day of CBOT July options trade, brokers said.
They noted that CBOT July rice futures settled at $6.00 per cwt on Friday. CBOT July rice call option open interest was actually heaviest at the $6.20 call, but there were 177 lots open in the July $6.00 call strike before on Friday's open, traders noted.
Trade of the CBOT September/July and November/July rice spreads was also active ahead of June 30, first notice day for deliveries against CBOT July, traders said.
Moreover, they noted good bidding interest in new-crop months amid talk that a cold, wet spring in top US rice growing states Arkansas and Louisiana had hurt crop development.
CBOT rice futures volume on Friday was estimated at 1,076 contracts, compared with the 620 lots traded on Thursday. Rice options volume was seen at 74 lots.
