Asian Rice:Prices Stable;Anticipated Demand,Limited Thai Sup.
Bangkok, Physical rice export prices were quoted firm in Thailand and Vietnam Friday, with anticipated buying demand from Iran and rather limited Thai rice supply helping to support Thai offers, exporters and traders said.
Iran is expected to seek more rice after having bought 60,000 metric tons recently, exporters said. A rice industry source said Iran has bought an additional 90,000 tons, but many exporters said they haven't heard of such a deal.
"I understand that Iran will buy more...however, we didn't hear of any fresh transactions during the past few days," said a senior official at a Thai rice export company.
Also, exporters that have to deliver rice to Iran and the Philippines under existing contracts are still seeking supplies to fulfill those requirements, and this is lending support to prices, exporters said.
Thai 100% B grade rice was offered Friday at $210 a ton, FOB, quite firm from quotes earlier this week, while the 25% broken grade was also offered steady at $180-$181/ton, FOB.
Exporters said Thai prices are too high to attract many buyers at the moment. The continued high prices of domestic rice, mainly caused by the government's rice intervention program, has led exporters to offer export rice at high prices, exporters said.
However, prices could eventually fall if the intervention buying slows, exporters said.
The government's buying program for the current crop is scheduled to end July 20. But exporters said the government may slow its purchases as current prices are higher than the intervention price.
In Vietnam, prices were mostly stable at rather low levels, traders said.
The presence of the summer-autumn rice crop harvest had led to ample supply, which has depressed prices, Vietnamese traders said.
Vietnamese 5% broken rice was offered steady Friday around $181-$183/ton, FOB. 25% broken rice was offered around $163/ton, FOB, around the same range as earlier in the week.
