Vietnam rice prices ease
HANOI , Vietnam's rice export prices eased this week on a lack of fresh demand but business would revive next month at the peak of the crop harvest, traders said.
Traders and officials said on Wednesday a counter trade deal between Vietnam and Indonesia, expected to be signed next week in Hanoi, would help stabilise local prices while exporters were running out of large government deals.
"Foreign buyers are not in a rush to buy now, waiting until next month when prices will soften on more supply," said a trader in Ho Chi Minh City, adding that many deals were expected to be sealed in July.
Traders said over the past two weeks, only one European trader bought 34,000 tonnes of Vietnamese 25 percent broken rice for Africa in two deals at FOB prices of $ 159 and $ 160 a tonne.
"These prices have set the benchmark for the market as the deals are the only ones," another trader said, adding that some exporters have tried to offer at prices of $ 162-$ 164 a tonne for the same grade.
Offers for five percent broken rice also eased this week to $ 182-$ 184 a tonne, FOB Saigon Port, from $ 184-$ 186 last week.
Traders said Vietnam would run short of the high quality five-percent broken grade because the upcoming summer-autumn crop normally produces lower quality grain.
The Mekong Delta grows three rice crops per year. Harvesting of the highest yielding winter-spring crop ended in April.
Ten vessels are loading this week a total of 98,200 tonnes at Saigon Port for Iraq, Cuba, Iran, Africa, Malaysia and the Philippines. Eight other vessels have completed loading 102,000 tonnes for Africa, Iraq, Malaysia and the Philippines.
A senior official at the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the industry body, told Reuters the counter trade deal, expected to be signed during the June 26-27 visit to Hanoi by the Indonesian president, would help stop the price decline and could even firm up local prices.
