Pakistan may not allow infested Indian wheat import
ISLAMABAD , Pakistan may not allow import of Indian wheat after reports that the commodity is infested and its arrival can expose Pakistan's crop to various diseases, it is learnt.
Sources told Business Recorder that Islamabad was fully aware that Indian wheat was infested and its import could create problems for Pakistan's commodity.
"We have received reports that Indian wheat is not up to the mark and hence its import can not be allowed," said sources.
After failing to secure a deal with Egypt for wheat, India is making desperate efforts to find an entry for its commodity into Pakistan.
It is using revised list of tradable items as an opportunity to achieve the end.
An Egyptian delegation, which also visited Pakistan soon after New Delhi, had rejected Indian commodity due to its low quality.
India is ready to sell its wheat to Pakistan at much cheaper rates.
The officials in Islamabad are fully conscious that some Pakistani traders were trying to import Indian wheat, without considering its quality, to earn profit.
The import of Indian wheat would doubtlessly be a big setback to the private sector as its investment and future plan could become redundant.
It would also prove as a double edged sword for the government as well.
It would not only lose revenue but would also shatter the confidence of private sector.
Flour millers are also opposing the move. They have conveyed concern to the government more than once during their meetings.
