Viet Nam gains firm foothold on world rice market
Ha Noi, Viet Nam is gaining a firm footing on the world rice market with its major rice importers of Indonesia, the Philippines, the Middle East and some African countries.
The foreign buyers are lured by the reasonable price of rice exports, often 10 USD per tonne lower than that of other giant rivals such as Thailand.
Currently, Viet Nam sells 25-percent broken rice at 166-167 USD per tonne; 5-percent broken rice, 186-187 USD per tonne; and 10-percent broken rice, 178-185 USD per tonne.
Viet Nam has recently won a contract to deliver 73,000 tonnes of 25-percent broken rice to the Philippines in May and June. It has also reached an agreement with Nigeria who pledged to buy Vietnam's rice over a long-term period. The United Nations has recently given the green light to Viet Nam to continue exporting 400,000 tonnes of rice to Iraq this year according to the oil for food programme.
Viet Nam had by the end of May exported 1.913 million tonnes of rice, grossing 359 million USD, up 47.4 percent year-on-year in volume and 28.3 percent in value. In May alone, the country earned 100 million USD from shipping abroad nearly 500,000 tonnes of rice.
The Ministry of Trade has estimated that Viet Nam's rice exports could reach 3.4-3.5 million tonnes worth a total of 625-650 million USD this year.
