Asian Rice: Prices Steady To Higher On Declining Supply
Physical rice export prices were steady to higher Thursday in Thailand and Pakistan, thanks to declining rice supply there, traders and exporters in Bangkok and Karachi said.
In Thailand, buying interest from Iran in particular encouraged exporters to raise their offers, said a Thai exporter.
"Iran is negotiating with exporters and the government...I expect the country to buy rice sometime soon" said the exporter.
Supply from the second rice crop is declining, as the harvest has already ended, which has helped boost Thai rice prices, exporters said.
Farmers are now growing the main rice crop, which will be harvested late in the year.
Thai 100% B grade rice was offered Thursday at $211 a metric ton, free on board, compared with $208/ton earlier this week and $205-$212/ton quoted last week.
Thai 5% and 25% broken rice were offered at $206/ton and $189/ton, respectively, compared with $201/ton and $177-$180/ton quoted earlier this week and $198-$207/ton and $177-$194/ton last week.
In Pakistan, prices are steady amid limited supply, a Karachi-based trader said.
"The rice crop will enter the market in October, and exportable supply will be available then," the trader said.
Pakistani 25% broken rice was offered steady Thursday at $177/ton, FOB.
