Thai rice prices seen steady
BANGKOK, Thai rice prices are expected to be steady in coming days, supported by a government buying scheme, having firmed in the past week, traders said on Thursday.
Thai 100 percent parboiled rice was offered on Thursday at $ 206-207 per tonne FOB, versus last week's $ 197.
"The price is likely to stay at this level in the coming week, given that the government still has another half a million tonnes to go. Their target is two million tonnes," a trader said.
Bangkok began buying paddy rice from the country's smaller 2002/03 second crop on March 20. The state buying scheme will run through to July 20.
As of June 4, the government had bought 1.2 million tonnes of paddy from farmers, traders and officials said.
Between January 1 and June 6, the world's top rice exporter shipped 2.77 million tonnes of rice, down from 2.92 million tonnes in the same period last year, figures from the commerce ministry showed.
Traders said the Myanmar government is due to meet local exporters and foreign buyers on Friday in Yangon to explain its new rice policy announced in April.
Rice is Myanmar's staple food and most important export commodity. Myanmar announced in April that the government would no longer buy paddy rice from farmers, ending a 40-year policy. No other information was made available.
