Vietnam rice prices up on fresh demand
HANOI ,Vietnam exporters pushed rice prices higher this week on fresh demand from Iran and Africa, even as the government called for more stockpiles on fear of insufficient supply due to thin output.
Exporters said one European buyer closed a deal in recent days for 15,000 tonnes of various broken grades for Africa.
They also said Iran had signed an agreement with the government to purchase 15,000 tonnes of the grain monthly.
Fresh export demands are also expected from several African countries. Rice traders from Nigeria have expressed interest in long-term export contracts with Vietnam, state media reported.
Vietnam 25 percent broken rice edged slightly up to $ 165-$ 166 a tonne, FOB Saigon Port, from $ 162-$ 165 last Wednesday. The five-percent broken rice grade also advanced to $ 184-$ 186 from $ 183-$ 185 last week.
This week, Vietnam's trade ministry called on domestic rice traders to begin stockpiling rice ahead of new export orders on fear of possible shortage due to thin production, traders said.
Total rice output of the highest yielding winter-spring crop that ended in April totalled 8.4 million tonnes, 200,000 tonnes less than last year.
The summer-autumn crop typically produces a lower quality grain normally used to make 15-percent and 25-percent broken rice.
Farmers in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam's rice basket, have planted 1.2 million ha (2.97 million acres) of the summer-autumn paddy crop, or 80 percent of the planned cultivation, state media reported.
On export front, eight vessels are loading 108,400 tonnes at Saigon Port this week for Africa, Iraq, Iran and Malaysia. Four other vessels have completed loading 45,315 tonnes for Cuba, Iraq and the Philippines.
